My Own Backyard

Digital video stills as ink jet prints

40” x 60”

2007-08

Inspired by the fantasy of seeing the world through my cats’ eyes, a specially designed Lycra suit attaches a tiny wireless video camera to their heads. Observer impacts the observed, and once suited, the cats barely move. They refuse to leave the backyard, and ultimately shake their heads free of the camera. Nothing happens. In the resulting footage, it is the glitch moments that seems to say the most. These moments 1/24 of a second yield images that look like surveillance of outer space. The resulting images reveal a merged plurality of subjectivities: artist, animal, technological apparatus and  landscape.
