Temporary Occupants: an Exhibition of Site Referential Works curated by Iris Bechdol and David Willburn
Advice & Desire/Temporary Occupants is an installation of text-based groundless thread drawings on wall panels in the corridor by the library at Eastfield Community College in Mesquite, TX. I have taught courses at the school, and the corridor is my familiar pathway between the office and the classroom. The wall panels alternate with windows that open visually into the library space. The corridor has several doorways. A viewer’s experience of the work is not necessarily sequential, but from left to right the texts read: ”develop interest”, “develop Knowing”, “develop style”, and “I hope to see you in Paris soon and again.” The works are part of an evolving translation and transformation of a personal letter. The letter didn’t necessarily say these things in this order, but in some way I am re-writing the letter to co-create advice, for myself first, but also to share. I’m interested in the relationship between these pieces and the signage often present in this hallway, signage that encourages passersby to improve their lot in life through participating in community college.
